It seems that “change” has come to America. I seriously doubt that much will change right away, and in truth, I hope nothing changes. Congratulations to Mr. Obama – I didn’t vote for you, but I see that many did. I hope that they’re ready to accept the consequences of their actions.
In truth I am more than disappointed. I really thought we’d see another election result like the last one – with Mr. McCain pulling ahead sometime in the night. But I guess people are just ready to try something different, and that’s okay. There is a saying that goes, “history always repeats itself”, and if I remember correctly we only had Jimmy Carter for four years, so this too shall pass.
Am I concerned for our nation? Absolutely! Am I concerned about our income? Certainly! Am I worried that in four years my husband will still have a job? Definitely! Do I believe Mr. Obama will cause more damage than he’s worth? You know it! Will I submit to his authority? Yes.
“Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished. For the authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right, but in those who are doing wrong. Would you like to live without fear of the authorities? Do what is right, and they will honor you.” Romans 13:1-3
You see, even though I did not vote for Mr. Obama, and even thought I think he’s going to try his hardest to destroy all the founding principles that America was built on, as a Christian I am called to submission to those in authority over me. The Bible does not distinguish between those we voted for and those we didn’t. It doesn’t tell us to submit to the authority of capitalists and not to the authority of socialists. It doesn’t make it okay for us to pick and choose who we want to obey, because all authority has been allowed by God. That doesn’t mean that God orchestrated the events that brought these people into power, but it means that God has allowed them to come into power so that His name will be glorified either through them or the circumstances that they create. His name is even glorified in the midst of trials and tribulations, and we may very well be getting ready to step into the fire.
However, as a Christian I believe this is my time to shine. As a church, I believe this is our chance to become effective again. As a community, we have an opportunity to stand up and do what’s right, what’s honorable, what’s pleasing to God. Over the next four years, we’re going to see even more hurting people – people who’ve lost jobs, loved ones, houses, possessions, businesses, friends, and many other things. There is going to be real need among us, and we will have the opportunity to serve those needs in ways the Government can’t even imagine.
There is still Good News for all who want to hear it. The sun has risen in the East. The sky did not fall during the night. And Jesus is still on his Throne.
